We spent a month road tripping through Portugal as a family and spent a week exploring Porto. Having young kids in tow, breakfast is the most important meal of the day for us, as it kick-starts us for the fun day ahead trying all of the child-friendly activities in Porto. We tried to find the best breakfast in Porto Portugal.

Mercador Café has a charming vintage décor, a perfect backdrop for the day’s first meal. Their breakfast menu offers a wonderful blend of Portuguese traditional breakfast and international cuisine.  They emphasise fresh, quality ingredients.  Located near to the cathedral it’s the perfect place to start a day of sightseeing.

Standout dishes include its exquisitely prepared banana bread and French toast. The friendly, relaxed atmosphere makes mornings there an experience to cherish and invites you to linger over delicious coffee. 

This was one of our favourite places to eat.  We’d highly recommend trying their pancakes – our son loved their banoffee ones!

15. My Green Pastry

If you’re looking for the best vegan breakfast in Porto, then My Green Pastry is the place to go.  This bakery dedicates itself to crafting vegan and gluten-free delights. We’d recommend enjoying the vegan pancake and smoothie bowls that taste as yummy as they sound. The ambiance here is warm and welcoming, making it an ideal pick for anyone seeking a breakfast that’s both light and nourishing. 

Top tip from a travel expert:  They only serve brunch on certain days, so it’s worth calling in advance to check ahead.

At The Happy Nest, you’ll be treated to a menu brimming with organic, locally sourced ingredients that embody the essence of Porto. Our top recommendation would undoubtedly be their signature granola bowls, which are an absolute must-try for a nutritious and satisfying morning meal. Their beautiful interior complements its relaxed ambiance perfectly, encapsulating the essence of its inviting name and making it a prime destination for a leisurely breakfast in Porto. 

If you love live music as much as we do, then this is a great place to head to, as they often have acoustic music played by a local musician.

17. Combi Coffee Roasters

At Combi Coffee Roasters, you’ll be surrounded by specialty coffees sourced globally. 

Their mastery in brewing coffee sets them apart as you can choose how your coffee is brewed. Pick from a choice of the espresso machine, Aeropress, french press, V60 dripper, cold drip brew, or nitro cold brew!

Why not complement a choice brew with their light yet satisfying breakfast offerings? The space’s industrial-chic décor, coupled with its lively ambiance, creates an ideal setting for those passionate about coffee.

19. 100 Culpa

At 100 Culpa the breakfast and brunch menu unveils a fusion that celebrates traditional Portuguese elements alongside global tastes.  This is the perfect place if you’re looking for vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free options.  

We love that it has a backyard terrace and garden that’s filled with citrus trees, where we could enjoy our meal outdoors.  They have an awesome array of different pancakes to try (yep, we eat pancakes wherever we go!), and we enjoyed the Anti-Ox ones.

20. O Gato Comeu-te a Língua

We loved visiting O Gato Comeu-te a Língua, which literally means “the cat ate your tongue,” Because it is known for serving specialty crepes and waffles. They have so many choices, you can enjoy a crepe covered in fruit, cream, and other toppings. They also offer incredible vegetarian options. 

If you’re feeling adventurous, and hungry (and have a sweet tooth!) then we suggest you try their big waffle sandwich. This epic breakfast comes with layers of waffles containing fruit, ice cream, and lots more. Yes, we class waffles and crepes in the same category as pancakes – so this was a winner with us!
