We spent a week based in Porto city as part of our month-long road trip in Portugal. During our visit we found that Porto had lots of cool things to do with kids. However, even though we had our boys with us, we knew that we wanted to try a few of the best wineries in Porto Portugal.

If you’re visiting Porto then a tour to at least one of the famous port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia is an absolute must!

After grabbing some breakfast, it’s a short walk across the Dom Luis I Bridge, before you’ll find several famous port wine houses waiting for you.  To help you choose which ones to visit we’ve put together a list of the best wineries in Porto City.

1. Sandeman Cellars

This is hands down one of the busiest port winerie in Porto and also one of the oldest founded in 1790. Famous for both their large collection of massive barrels and masked mascot, you can take a tour of their historic port cellar in their granite building before you enjoy sampling one of their tawny ports such as their white port wine.  It has a selection of tours from guided visits to comprehensive tastings of tawny ports. The cellars not only teach us about the ageing process but also underscore the pivotal role that Sandeman played in the fortified wine saga of Portugal.

2. Graham’s Port Lodge

We discovered Graham’s Port Lodge high atop a hill overlooking the bustling city of Porto. Founded in 1820, this iconic winery has dedicated itself to crafting premium quality port wines. The Lodge wows wine lovers with not only a comprehensive tour they also have a selection of food add-ons that include a chocolate pairing to through to a multi-course dining experience.  They also have private tasting room as well as a museum plus an on-site restaurant.

4. Taylor’s Port

The Taylor’s winery was founded in 1692 making it one of the most historic vineyards within the Douro Valley. This Porto winery has an easy to use a self-guided tour which is great when you want to go at your own pace, or, in our case have kids that distract you a lot.  It makes it a perfect place if you’re in a rush or are maybe wanting just an overview of the production process behind port wine. 

What we loved was that it had an incredible garden which meant that we could enjoy our port whilst the kids played. This winery is one of the most Instagrammable places in Porto!

5. Ferreira Cellars

The leading businesswoman behind the Ferreira empire, Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, championed the Douro Region’s potential long before its recognition. Founded in 1588, Croft is one of the most admired Port wine brands. A visit here will reveal the secret of their award-winning winemaking methods. You also have a chance to explore their terraced vineyards which is especially relaxing on a summers day. We’ve heard that their blind tastings are great fun and make their tour one of the best from any of the Porto wineries in Portugal!

9. Churchill’s Wine Cellar

Churchill’s Wine Cellar is a beacon of modernity in the age-old port wine tradition of northern Portugal having only been founded in 1981. We should start by letting you know that it’s pronounced “Coburns”, and can trace its heritage back to 1815. The Aveleda Wines production of their “Vinho Verde” which translates as “green wine” makes them the top producer of what is actually a white wine. The term “green wine” comes from the fact it should be drunk whilst it is still young or “green”.  Vinho Verde is refreshingly crisp with fruit notes. The Portuguese locals enjoy pairing it with with seafood or pork.

How do you get to the Porto wineries?

The fantastic thing is that most of the Port winery tours and tastings are in Porto so you don’t need to drive to get to them. All these port lodges can be found along the same waterfront stretch of street in Vila Nova de Gaia. It’s just a quick walk across the bridge from Porto.
